(When a pair gets in a fight with a bridge, the bridge wins...)

When you row for thousands and thousands of kilometers, there’s bound to be some wear on the boats. A few floating logs, a botched docking job, a small fender-bender in the boat bays: all this can leave our beautiful boats with some nicks and bruises.

This week, a team from Empacher flew out from Germany to generously donate their expertise to repair and refurbish the US fleet. It’s no easy task– on the women’s team alone, we have two Empacher eights, four quads and straight fours, at least eight doubles and pairs, and a handful of singles. That’s quite the armada of yellow boats to clean, buff, paint, and patch!

To thank Mr. Empacher and his two assistants for their amazing generosity, we did what Americans do best: threw them a bbq potluck! Though to be honest, between the spinach salad, quinoa, bean dip, zucchini-corn bread, orzo salad, green bean salad, mixed vegetables, and watermelon, it wasn’t quite the traditional American barbeque spread! (In my opinion, much more delicious– and nutritious!) Of course, we still had the meat, but who wants hotdogs when you can have homemade spring rolls?
